KEEP THE STORY ALIVE
October 27, 1870, endures as a significant date in the history of Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, for on that day General William Jackson Palmer and his associates filed articles of incorporation in the territories of Colorado and New Mexico. In the ensuing 100-plus year history, the story of the Denver and Rio Grande Western takes more twists and turns than any line that the road ever built over mountain passes. It's a story of men and machines, of boxcars and boardrooms, of visionaries and pirates, and most of all it's a story of the dedicated people who built a railroad “through the Rockies, not around them.”
The Rio Grande Modeling & Historical Society is a group of enthusiasts who are interested in the history and modeling of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad or its predecessors. Although the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad is now part of the vast Union Pacific system, it's a fascinating story we try to keep alive through the efforts of the Society to ensure that the memory of the railroad lives on. The group publishes a magazine called The Prospector, which contains articles, photos, and drawings of the railroad and its equipment. The group also organizes conventions, supports model manufacturers, and produces data CDs for its members and the public. You can learn more about the group and its activities here on our website
Call for Former D&RGW Employees
We are interested in hearing from former employees. The RGM&HS is looking for employees from all aspects of the Denver & Rio Grande Western to share a brief description of their job with the Rio Grande and how it advanced the Rio Grande's interests. The goal is to broaden understanding of the many hands that were required to make the railroad a success.
