    Description

Volume 24, Number 1 of the Prospector, our professionally produced and beautifully illustrated quarterly magazine featuring the finest work of historians and other experts on all aspects of Rio Grande Railroad was published in Quarter 1 of 2025 calendar year.

The etched glass Rio Grande logo created by George Buss in the Silver Banquet’s door in February 1980. – Roger Puta

This issue, instead of celebrating new beginnings, it celebrates the end of not only the Rio Grande Zephyr in 1983, but the end of the Rio Grande itself in 1997. Our two authors, Daniel Quiat and Chuck Conway, have documented in text and photographs both of these events.

The Rio Grande Zephyr Part 2 of Daniel Quiat including its history, operations, and the transition period after the California Zephyr ended. The article also discusses the maintenance and refurbishment of the train’s equipment, the challenges faced, and the eventual discontinuation of the Rio Grande Zephyr in 1983. Additionally, it provides information about the preservation of the train’s equipment and the society’s efforts to keep the history alive through publications and events.  Part 1 was in Prospector 22, Number 4

1997-The Last Grande Year In Colorado by Chuck Conway Rio Grande locomotives had their final significant year in Colorado, contrasting with the less reliable Southern Pacific units. New re manufactured locomotives arrived, and operations changed, redistributing D&RGW units. Union Pacific’s 1996 acquisition led to the closure of the Royal Gorge line and rerouted traffic. The iconic GP60s powered the Ski Train, while through traffic declined, leaving only coal and taconite trains by mid-1997. By year’s end, Rio Grande power was concentrated at Helper and Grand Junction, marking the end of an era with the last unit retired in 2008.

This issue will hopefully bring the publishing schedule of the Prospector back on track (pun intended)! This issue is also special to me as it reminds me of our trip on the RGZ for our honeymoon in September of 1981.

This issue includes stunning photographs, detailed modeling tips, and much more. Don’t miss out on this rich collection of stories and insights from the world of Rio Grande railroading.

    Description

Volume 24, Number 2 of the Prospector, our professionally produced and beautifully illustrated quarterly magazine featuring the finest work of historians and other experts on all aspects of Rio Grande Railroad was published in Quarter 2 of 2025 calendar year.

This issue with the Final Chapter of Dan Quiat’s series on the Rio Grande Zephyr. We are grateful that photographer Dennis Toeppen agreed to share his images of
the last runs of the train and its equipment.

This issue also begins a two-part series on the Rio Grande’s Fairbanks-Morse locomotives, Part one covering the H10-44 switchers and the H15-44 road switchers. Part two will cover the Train Master tests and the Erie-builts. The collaboration of author Allen Copeland and member John Tudek have brought us a comprehensive look at these five unique locomotives. John spent several days at the Colorado Railroad Museum combing through the Rio Grande records preserved there bringing the folios, valuation cards and other records for these units. There was not enough room in this issue to include these for every unit so we have placed
them on the RGM&HS website and may be viewed here:

    Until the next issue.

    Description

Volume 24, Number 3 of the Prospector, our professionally produced and beautifully illustrated quarterly magazine featuring the finest work of historians and other experts on all aspects of Rio Grande Railroad was published in Quarter 3 of 2025 calendar year.

We are pleased to introduce a Co-Editor for this issue, Corey Bonsall, who will be taking over as the Prospector Editor beginning with issue 25-1. Corey has assembled the majority of this issue with my supervision and has done a wonderful job.

This issue brings Matt Darling’s coverage of the last run of D&RGW’s 2-8-8-2, No. 3610, and Part 2 of Allen Copeland’s article on the Fairbanks-Morse locomotives that were tested on the Rio Grande, but not purchased. John Tudek has once again provided scans of original documents from the CRRM’s Richardson Library. Again, we do not have room to include all the documents, but have
placed them on the RGM&HS website with Part 1’s documents and can be viewed on the RGM&HS website and may be viewed here:

Volume 24, Number 4 of the Prospector, our professionally produced and beautifully illustrated quarterly magazine featuring the finest work of historians and other experts on all aspects of Rio Grande Railroad was published in Quarter 4 of 2025 calendar year.

The issue presents Society updates, leadership notes, and membership information while showcasing Rio Grande’s “The Silverton” Before the Sale, a richly illustrated historical feature by Richard Severance. His photographic round trip traces the Durango–Silverton line from its 1880s origins through its mid‑20th‑century tourist era, capturing locomotives, canyon scenery, and operations leading up to the 1981 sale. Additional sections include editorial transitions, volunteer needs, and a geological overview of how the San Juan Mountains and Silverton caldera formed.
